CSS copy-protection way around

Almost every commercial DVD that you purchase has CSS copy-protection. This is one of the reasons you cannot use a standard DVD burning application (such as Nero) on its own to back them up. You need some type of method to decrypt this protection to be able to copy the movie files and make a backup.

1Click DVD by itself cannot decrypt CSS out of the box; in fact it is now illegal to do so. A recent lawsuit (pending appeal) against 321 Studio’s DVDXCopy ruled against allowing software manufacturers to include any type of CSS decryption within the software itself.

You will need to use a DVD ripper like DVD43 or AnyDVD to backup protected movie DVDs – which works perfectly! DVD43 is a free software and is regularly updated. Once you have your DVD ripper running in the background you will have a seamless experience of burning. You will still be able to burn a DVD with a click of a button.

Since we are not providing this DVD ripper software, our company is not doing anything illegal.

Compression and Re-authoring

CSS copy-protection is not the only hurdle you will encounter when trying to backup a commercial DVD. Many commercial DVD’s are dual layer (greater than 4.38GB) which cannot fit on the single layer (4.38GB max) media that is the norm today. This is where compression (a.k.a. transcoding) and re-authoring software (such as 1Click DVD) come into play.
There are different methods to backup a dual layer commercial DVD; one method is to re-author the movie by stripping out the extra features, menus, or any extra sound tracks that you do not need (for example French or Spanish). Depending on the length of the movie this will either keep the original quality level of the DVD or dramatically reduce the compression needed. The other method is to back-up the entire DVD. Although this will require a higher level of compression and a larger loss of quality, there are some people that do not mind the quality loss in favour of keeping the entire DVD with all of its features intact. 1Click DVD allows you to choose whichever method best suits your needs.

Tips about Dual Layer burning

The burners nowadays are DL (Dual Layer), not Dual Burning. The DL denotes the burners ability to burn onto DL media which has about twice the amount of space of a standard SL (Single Layer) disc. The advantage of using DL media is there shouldn’t be any compression needed, thus obtaining basically a 1:1 copy of whatever you are backing up. The downfall is the price of the media…typically around $2 per disc, whereas, SL discs are around $.30 each.

In my personal experience I find most things require little or no compression and for the important stuff I might use a DL, but always make an SL too and really can’t see a difference. Find some Verbatims on sale sometime and try it yourself as you will be the ultimate judge as to whether or not the quality is where you want it to be.

My trip to Switzerland

In July I took a 10 night holiday in the beautiful Jungfrau region of Switzerland, staying at the Sunstar Hotel in Wengen with Dan from work, Gary from uni and my mum (though she only came for the last 7 days). By day we explored the area and did some great walks and by night we enjoyed wonderful food and a couple of pints of the local brew. Thankfully, the photos are only of the day.
Some facts about Switzerland: Switzerland (German: Schweiz, French: Suisse, Italian: Svizzera, Romansh: Svizra), officially the Swiss Confederation (Confoederatio Helvetica in Latin, hence its ISO country code CH), is a landlocked country of 7.5 million people in Western Europe with an area of 41,285 km². Switzerland is a federal republic consisting of 26 states called cantons. Berne is the seat of the federal government and de facto capital,[5] while the country’s economic centres are its two global cities, Geneva and especially Zürich. Switzerland is bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. Switzerland is multilingual and has four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. Switzerland has a long history of neutrality – it has not been at war since 1815 – and hosts many international organizations, including the Red Cross, the WTO and one of the U.N.’s two European offices.

Switzerland was not invaded during either of the World Wars. During World War I, Switzerland was home to Vladimir Illych Ulyanov (Lenin) and he remained there until 1917 ^[6].
